A stout structure

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

In Berlin stands this impressive construction. A bunker built in 1942 to house civilians in case of an attack.

The old fellow has a long history which includes everything from being a storage for exotic fruits in the 50es, an exhibition space for O. Elliasson and the location of various S/M, fetish and erotic parties up through the 80es and 90es.

In 2003 it became private property and was renovated over the following four years. It now houses the owner’s collection of contemporary art and can be visited by appointment only.

Blown away by creativity

Monday, February 1st, 2010

During fashion week I also made it to the vernissage of Danish artist Helle Mardahl‘s exhibition at Circle Culture Gallery.

I LOVED her work! Art that I can understand and relate to. You can tell she has a background in fashion design and she uses those perspectives in her artistic expression.

What I found most impressive: all the peculiar little details and kind of playful, esthetic appeal. Do yourself a favour and go see the pieces in real life.

The exhibit is on until March 6.

Helle with her frolic hat that reminded me of something from the Roger Rabbit movie. I want one!

A cultural highlight !

I probably mentioned before, that I’m not much of a museum goer BUT maybe some of you readers are.

When I come to think of it, this is probably a good opportunity for me to overcome my phobias towards museums.

This Saturday is the 26. long night of the museums. Venues accross Berlin are open from 18:00 – 02:00, presenting special exhibitions, guided tours and various events.

More information HERE.

This summer’s accessory

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I know….summer seems so far away. Longing so bad! But on the bright side: plenty of time to practise for these body/face paintings! – cause some look pretty complicated.

I think it would be a GREAT accessory. Not permanent like a tattoo….cheap….all you need is a set of crayons, some patience and maybe a partner to help you unless you are hyper flexible.

By the way, I seem to have left my party mood somewhere last week. Just can’t remember where? “Hey, I was at your club last week and I think I lost my party mood there. Did anybody hand it in?”

Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

A copy of the top photo below by Arno Rafael Minkkinen is hanging on my wall at home. Can’t say exactly what it is about it that I like so much but I think it’s the combination of somehow tranquility and agitation.

I’m quite fascinated by especially the earlier work of this Finnish born photographer. Find more information + a selection of his pieces on Artnet

Hmmm… go for art?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

On Friday a new exhibition at Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin opens. Conceptual artist Karin Sander brings together the work of 566 Berlin-based artists in the extensive exhibition “Zeigen. An Audio Tour through Berlin”.

The unusual thing about this exhibition is that the space seems empty at first. Only the names of the participating artists appear on the walls. The explanation: Karin Sander asked her fellow artists to translate their own work into an acoustic piece.

The “interpretations” can be accessed from an audio guide – performed sung, spoken, recited. The non-visual approach makes room for an individual, imaginativ experience, where the visitor creates his/her own conception of the art work.

Opening: Friday, December 4, 2009, 21:00
Exhibition: December 5 – January 10 2010 open daily from 11 am to 6 pm, Thursdays to 9 pm

Go beyond borders

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I mentioned street art in a previous post. Here is a project created to celebrate the fall of the Berlin wall.

Throughout Berlin ‘Go beyond borders’ tape (40 km were produced!) marked the original position of the Berlin Wall. In some cases the wall line would go through Hotels, Offices and restaurants that were built after the fall.

Furthermore eight Tape Art installations were made across Berlin to tell the stories of people who went beyond the most notorious border of our times. Exactly where they happened.

Go here for more information on the project, e.g a googlemap to make your own walking tour of the remaining installations plus archive photo and video material of the stories.

German and American forces cooperated on this project – street artist El Bocho (really cool guy! – check website) and CNN International

Gobeyondborders

You can still see the art at some locations around Berlin:
- Bar in Neukölln ( forever )
- S-Bahnhof Potsdamer platz, two spots (Till Jan 1st, 2010)
- Marriott Hotel (1 more week)
- Zimmerstrasse Tunnels (1 more week)

I’m not a keen musem goer but I do like photography exhibitions!

Nan Goldin
is an American photographer known for working with intimate moments through themes like sexuality and genders, documenting the expression of deep emotions, love acts, drag queens and so on.

From 10.10 till 06.12 you can experience her Poste Restante Slideshow and Grids Exhibition at C/O Berlin on Oranienburger Straße! Expect some slightly provoking stuff.

Will go check it out this weekend.

Vector artists in Berlin

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Another exhibition that might be worth a visit. Blood Sweat Vector. A vector artist community (online) founded in 2008 and now presenting a collection of pieces from various members.

In case you’re new in the graphic design world, definition by WIKI:
Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based on mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics.

The Blood Sweat Vector exhibition at West Berlin Gallery on Brunnenstr. 56 just opened this Thursday and ends on 12. December.
