“These pictures come out of relationships, not observation.”

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I’m not a keen musem goer but I do like photography exhibitions!

Nan Goldin
is an American photographer known for working with intimate moments through themes like sexuality and genders, documenting the expression of deep emotions, love acts, drag queens and so on.

From 10.10 till 06.12 you can experience her Poste Restante Slideshow and Grids Exhibition at C/O Berlin on Oranienburger Straße! Expect some slightly provoking stuff.

Will go check it out this weekend.

Torstraße is blooming

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Well, not literally but the street has really changed in the last year or two. One gallery /showroom / concept store after another has popped up, mingling with the old kiosks, wash salons and “imbisses”.

Torstraße has definately become a go see. Whether during the day for a bit of shopping, in the late afternoon for a vernissage, in the evening for dinner or at night for a vodka/tonic at Muschi Obermaier – or really late at night for a beer at Kaffee Burger.

More details on stores, galleries, restaurants etc will follow in the near future. I mentioned vietnamese restaurant DUDU already. Speaking of which, happy birthday Nam!!

Start your route at the Schönhauser Allee intersection and walk all the way to Friedrichstraße. Or the other way of course….as you like.

Illustrative days

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

When I get back to Berlin I have to go visit Illustrative 09 before it ends on 1. November. It is an international forum for contemporary illustration and graphic arts.

Having worked as a project manager of graphic design processes I find the process of developing visual designs that express the identity of a firm really interesting. Of course graphic design/corporate design is a small a part of the event that besides an exhibition (that also displays illustration, comics, animation etc.) features conferences, a film programme etc.

“Artsy” Berlin ?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

- all of those small, partly unofficial events taking place in empty, “scruffy” places. Often vernissages, exhibitions or the like where people use the occassion to go somewhere new, drink cheap sparkling wine or becks and chat while a hobby-dj is spinning experimental records – and 80% of the people have lived in Berlin less than two years.

I don’t want to sound offensive. Just trying to describe it. It can be quite fun!

My friend Stéphen is throwing one of these events in his gallery tonight. So if you don’t know what I’m talking about but want to experience it yourself – go to Friedrichshain. I would if I were in Berlin. Not only because it’s Stéphen (and therefor cool) but because we should all go somewhere new sometimes.

On Saturday there is the opening of a temporary Nike SB store + the ALIVE WITH PLEASURE exhibition of Berlin based photographer Alex Flach in Torstraße 72 in Mitte. The exhibition shows pictures of the German NIKE SB Team touring through Tokyo, Dubai, Capetown and Cairo. I would go check out the photos! – and test the indoor miniramp set up for the occasion?

Grand Opening: 10.10.09 19.00 hrs
Closing Date: 30.11.09

Since I will be at Berghain at 21:00 I can’t go to this reception at Swedish design gallery Jacksons, recommended by photographer friend Noshe. If you are free tonight it’s an open event. The occassion is a Bruno Mathsson exhibition. For those of you who are interested in furniture design.
