Russian delight – imbiss style

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Had lunch with Evan at this Russian place just around the corner from his office the other day.

Very unpretentious decor but great food for the price. Where else can you get a proper lunch for two including tips for €11? Salads, pierogis, curd cheese pancakes…choose yourself, imbiss style.

Inselstraße, Mitte around nr 8.

Was geht ab, Digger?

Friday, July 30th, 2010

If I had a € for every time my flatmate says those words, I wouldn’t have to work. I believe it’s a Hamburg thing?

BUT what’s going “ab” tomorrow is that he’s playing live with Penner at WEEKEND. Release party for their album “Same Monkeys, different Zoo”.

So sad I can’t be there but celebrating friends marrying in Helsinki isn’t bad either.
Go support!

The beauty of the incomplete

A must see in Berlin. Neues Museum. Completely restored and rebuilt by British architect David Chipperfield and his team over a period of twelve years. Finished October 2009.

Ich bin ein schnitzel!

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

If you fancy a super size, thinly pounded cut of veal coated in breadcrumbs, fried and served with a slice of lemon and potato salad, read on!

There are lots of places in Berlin to get a Wiener Schnitzel but which is better?

1. Austria in Kreuzberg (this one also comes upon recommendation from meat connoisseur Robin)

2. Schneeweiß in Friedrichshain where the Schnitzel comes in minimalistic, white and wooden surroundings

3. Bötzow in Mitte (bonus: wash it down with a world class Tegernseer draft)

Stop complaining and enjoy yourself!

“A bar (also called a pub, tavern, beer garden, or saloon) is an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks — beer, wine, liquor, and cocktails — for consumption on the premises.

Bars provide stools or chairs that are placed at tables or counters for their patrons. Some bars have entertainment on a stage, such as a live band, comedians, go-go dancers, or strippers.

Types of bars range from “dives” to elegant places of entertainment for the elite.”
#Wikipedia definition.

Went to Kingsize last Saturday when Pierre was playing (ace set!). Maybe my 3rd time there? They do serve alcoholic drinks but unfortunately there are no go-go dancers (except for the self-proclaimed chease sniffers), it’s over-crowded and too smokey. And yes, I’m getting old!

Michelin Stars in the forties

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

There are many reasons why I love, love, LOVE Berlin. One of them is the multi-kulti cuisine where you can indulge in everything from a world class Currywurst mit Pommes from Konnopke to an eight-course savory molecular creation at Reinstoff.

Somewhere in between (closer to Reinstoff than Konnopke) lures a three course lunch menu at a Michelin restaurant for only forty something Euro! A scoop!

I’ve been wanting to treat myself with a lunch deluxe for a while but I didn’t get around to it yet. Also, which one to visit first? If you went already, please share experiences!

An evening in red

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Off to an evening organised by the Moroccan Tourist Board.
The RedNight takes place in Milan, Paris, London, New York and Berlin. - Discover the spirit, atmosphere and charm of this “red city”.

As always, for me the highlight is the food. A three course menu for 300 people. Glad I’m not cooking!

Sometimes it’s okay to be square

The Max Dudler (am I the only one who thinks that name is funky?) team of architects are the masters behind Germany’s biggest open access library.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum, the Humboldt University library.

How impressive is this classic, geometric building with its strict symmetry? Just looking at the photos makes me straighten my back.

Located in Geschwister-Scholl-Straße just behind Friedricshtraße Station.

Looking for a loft?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I haven’t seen the space in real life but I recently discovered Miniloft when I was looking for visitor accommodation in Berlin.

I’m a fan of the minimalistic look yet with an attention to detail and I actually drove by the place several times, noticing the unusual design without knowing it was a holiday rental.

So might be the place for you to stay if you’re coming to Berlin anytime soon. Central location in Mitte inbetween Hauptbahnhof and Oranienburgerstraße.
