Craving Kraken

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I had dinner at Schwarzer Hahn in Friedrichshain recently. Über delicious! Nice and simple concept: 7-8 courses on the menu + daily specials, a couple of selected wines and Augustiner Beer.

Honest food at fair prices (€10 – 17) for a main – in a nice and quiet street in Friedrichshain.

Birthday bash big time

Friday, July 16th, 2010

My flatmate is celebrating his birthday at Arena tonight! Playing 00:00 – 03.00. As we say in Danish: Kom glad!

Also friend visiting from Copenhagen. Weekend schedule includes late lunch on roof terrace, sundowner beer at 25, bday party, Austrian dinner, MtB Arty Fun Session and Mauerpark Karaokee. We’ll see what else…

Ali playing flatmate and Nils’s track at Berlin, Beats & Boats last weekend.

Ich bin ein schnitzel!

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

If you fancy a super size, thinly pounded cut of veal coated in breadcrumbs, fried and served with a slice of lemon and potato salad, read on!

There are lots of places in Berlin to get a Wiener Schnitzel but which is better?

1. Austria in Kreuzberg (this one also comes upon recommendation from meat connoisseur Robin)

2. Schneeweiß in Friedrichshain where the Schnitzel comes in minimalistic, white and wooden surroundings

3. Bötzow in Mitte (bonus: wash it down with a world class Tegernseer draft)

My sister is visiting = double trouble. If you need some weekend planning inspiration here’s our schedule (according to plan but plans like rules are made to be broken – or changed).

Starting tonight with a vernissage somewhere at Unter den Linden. I actually have no clue what it’s about. Sarah invited us. Then dinner at Cream including vodka/rhubarb, a Doppelkorn for digestion and a dance while saying hi to the Italian Stallion.

Friday: work, lunch with Felix, work, work and then dinner at Bandol. Maybe going to the roof for a drink and then call it the night.

Saturday is BUSY. Don’t know about the order yet on but One Year Anniversary + Soju Bar opening at Kimchi Princess, friends playing at Bar 25 + Iva’s man playing at Kleine Reise.

Kuchi‘s bday party on Sunday + boat trip with former employer followed by dinner with business partners.

Michelin Stars in the forties

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

There are many reasons why I love, love, LOVE Berlin. One of them is the multi-kulti cuisine where you can indulge in everything from a world class Currywurst mit Pommes from Konnopke to an eight-course savory molecular creation at Reinstoff.

Somewhere in between (closer to Reinstoff than Konnopke) lures a three course lunch menu at a Michelin restaurant for only forty something Euro! A scoop!

I’ve been wanting to treat myself with a lunch deluxe for a while but I didn’t get around to it yet. Also, which one to visit first? If you went already, please share experiences!

I scored the best meal

I had dinner with Ami and Anders on Saturday after spending a little time at the Adicup (Mitte gone Kreuzberg). We went to this Jamaican place in Muskauerstraße that Ami had heard about.

Sweet potato/pineapple lasagna, roasted pork and kingsize sweet potato/ginger gnocchi (yes, I love sweet potato). Not how I imagined Jamican food but was absolutely köstlich.

Neither Ami’s or Anders’ food was very interesting though so maybe just go for my dish. And the prosecco happy hour (€2,50/glass) that ends at 20:00.

Bethanien. Sounds like something from a fairy tale!

Friday, May 28th, 2010

It even looks like something from a fairy tale!

The two gentlemen (I don’t know if they really are gentlemen but it sounds better than saying “the two guys”) Wolfgang Sinhart (White Trash) and Michael Böhl (Admiralspalast) open the doors to their new restaurant tonight. Located in Künstlerhaus Bethanien.

Oh, I wish I could go!! But I have a dinner at a friend’s place. Roof terrace in Kreuzberg. Also very nice! Then a magazine launch at Bar 25 where Sasse is playing. Maybe see you later?

One opening after the other

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Summer is truly being kicked off with a number of new venues around the city – and the well known spots getting ready for another (hopefully fantastic!) season.

I put together a list for you. Below the photo. Places that are “must experience” this season.

Photo from LastNightsParty

King Size?
New bar from the people behind Grill Royal located in Friedrichstraße close to Oranienburgerstraße. I went on the opening night but I’m not sure about the name. Was it “King Size”? Bar Tausend watch out for competition!

Tausend in the sky
Soon to open again. The roof terrace venue in Kreuzberg located in the same building as Kimchi Princess. Great for a sundowner drink or pre-clubbing on a warm night.

Chipps
New restaurant run by Cookie and his team. As mentioned, I went to the opening last Saturday and looking forward to go back and test the food! I’m sure I will spend several late summer nights outside on the terrace.

Resort
The Rodeo jungs are behind this new venue. A restaurant located at the river. Opening tomorrow! More info will follow.

Soho House
With a pool on the roof terrace this venue will probably host some great parties this summer. I believe the opening is on May 4th? At least that was the last info I got per mail.

WEEKEND Roof
Opening tomorrow, Thursday. Many great Summer evenings and Sunday afternoons to come will be spend there!

BAR 25
Does this place need and introduction? Opening on April 30th, 23:59. Reinfeiern!

- and I heard rumours aaaages ago that another very wellknown face from the Berlin nightlife is planning to open a bar….still waiting for hard facts.

We’ll just have to go back

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Went to the opening of Cookie’s new restaurant Chipps on Saturday. Must have been too busy sipping vodka rhubarb, chitchatting and toe-tapping to take any proper photos.

This is the only photo you get. The rest are unsharp or just not meant for public showing. MM will appreciate this.

So I’ll just have to go back and do proper photos – and taste the food. Bonus info: As opposed to Cream (Cookie’s other place) Chipps is not a vegetarian restaurant.

Torstraße treasure

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

If you appreciate unpretentious, simple, charming little restaurants with an uneven price/quality relationship (as in the food is just that good) you will love Themroc!

Had dinner there on Sunday and fell in love. Super “tranquille” (thought this would be the right word to describe the atmosphere since the owners are French) and still professionel and competent.

The kitchen is open from 19:00 till orders stop coming in and the daily changing menu is displayed on a board outside. Just one starter/main/desert a day. Simple is better!

Welcome to China

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

On Friday, Annamaria and I were invited for dinner at Ming Dynastie, one of two restaurants in Berlin belonging to Heinrich Chen and his family (love the name!).

This is one of those gems hidden in a touristy location like Europacenter and with a simple décor far from hip but do your tastebuds a favour and enter!

I’ve always associated the Chinese kitchen with greasy noodles and sweet & sour sauce but the food we were served on Friday was so authentic, rich and delicious!

Appearantly authenticity characterises the Sichuan and Huaiyang cuisine that Ming Dynastie represents. Okay, so I could have been without the boiled chicken feet and the pig’s ear but sometimes you have to try something new.

Heinrich joined us for dinner and told us about the Sichuan and Huaiyang cuisine and was such an entertaining host!

But beware if you go there and he suggests the “Rosenschnapps” as a digestive. At least don’t judge this bottle on the innocent rose/orange colour. Not even the taste reflects the 54% content.

Fat floating in your vains

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

This place used to be an insider tip but since you have to make reservations to be sure to get a table these days, I guess the tip got around.

The BIRD. My English vocabulary is too poor to describe how amazing their burgers and fries taste. Let’s say Burger Heaven must be the Bird’s kitchen.

I have to add though: I remember the first time I finished my burger + fries there. I felt sick for two days. As if I’d had a drip of fat feeding into my vein. But it was worth it. Haven’t finished the whole plate since though. This place is NOT for amateurs!

“At least TRY eating the damn burger with your hands. All you uptight people with your forks and your knives are driving us crazy. And for God’s sake don’t order your meat well done.”

Vodka shots after dinner are mandatory. Good for digestion. We went for Peter’s birthday dinner btw.But you don’t need and excuse to go. Just hunger. Maybe a crave for fat.

I’m a sucker for weird tattoos. Will also see if I can get myself this Godzilla t-shirt. Donald, the waiter, said he bought it in Tiki Heart in Kreuzberg.

Just for the record…
